CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Aside from attending board meetings and making policy decisions, what is the primary role of a board member? Whether newly elected or a seasoned board member; whether appointed as secretary or as president; and whether we have a strong association or one that’s facing challenges, board member core roles and responsibilities are unchanging.
First and foremost, volunteer HOA board members are advocates for the community they serve. That means they act on behalf of residents and make decisions that help improve resident experience and property values.
Our board members are also doers and responsible for following governing documents to ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly. This includes setting policies and making decisions that are in the best interest of the community. This is a weighty task and it’s important to run for the board for the right reasons. Becoming a board member to change a rule, add an amenity or make life easier for oneself is not the right reason to become a board member.
Being a visionary and focused on the future of our association is key for board members. Developing and nurturing a strategic plan is paramount. In partnership with management, a well thought out community plan is designed to identify strategic goals for the entire association and outline strategies and action plans to help achieve those goals. It provides a roadmap of where the association should be in 5 to 10 years, no matter who is on the board.
It truly takes a special individual to volunteer their time as an association board member. We appreciate those that step up to advocate for our community.
