Art Club

Roadhaven Art Club January News 2021

Happy New Year and Welcome Back Everyone!

Unfortunately due to Covid-19 health and safety considerations, our full season of art activities has been put on hold.  There will be no Open House, Paint Party or Art Show this season; and, the  Art Club will only be open on a limited basis.

An acrylic abstract painting class will be the only class offered this year. The instructor/facilitator is Mike Middleton. Beginning watercolor and beginning oil painting classes will not be offered and will resume next season.

The Art Club will continue to offer scheduled “Open Sessions” for free painting and sketching. The Monthly calendars of these scheduled sessions plus the acrylic abstract painting class will be posted on the Art Room Window. There will be sign-up sheets available for these open sessions and art classes in the Art Room. PLEASE NOTE! Due to Covid restrictions, SPACE IS LIMITED to

7 people in the East Art Room and 5 people in the West Art Room. SIGN UP EARLY to save your space in these sessions or classes.

The Art Club is looking forward to offering a full schedule of activities and classes next season. Stay safe!

Bocce Ball

The Bocce Ball season is about to begin but would be impossible without the dedication of the volunteers that make the Bocce Club the biggest in the park. Under the direction of Jim Zimmerman and Paul Murawski the light poles are up with the assistance of Larry Trettin, Doug Beatty, Chris Otley, Ken Price, Jim Beley, Gary Moe, Steve Charlton, John Lombard, Ken Horstman, Joe Dorner, John Milhofer, Kelly Munsell, Dick Sagen, Ron Horvath, Bob Iverson, Rich Sims, and Brian Zimmerman. Kudos to the Roadhaven maintenance men, Brian and Jim, who made the work easier and lighter. Thank you all.

The Board appreciates those that are following the protocol of wearing masks and social distancing. Keeping everyone healthy for the upcoming season is a top priority.

Our Registrar, Sandy Magnan, has worked over-time in communicating and coordinating the season amid the uncertainty and frustration that COVID-19 has produced. Her effort and time are greatly appreciated, and we ask that you mark your calendars and get your teams registered for the season.

Captains – Need help completing your registration form?  Are you looking for more members to fill your team during this season? Players – Looking for a team to join for this season?

Come down to the Bocce Courts on Tuesday, January 5 at 10:00 AM and we can help. There is a limit of 50 people in the Bocce Court area and due to close quarters, please wear a mask. In order to reduce numbers and serve everyone in a timely manner, teams looking for additional players should only send the captain or a team representative.  All players looking for a team for this year should attend.

Play is scheduled to begin January 11, 2021, but days and times are yet to be determined. There are fewer teams than during a normal year. Sessions will be filled with as close to 8 teams as possible. If you have not already returned your team registration form or notified us that you will not be playing this year, it is imperative that all teams contact Sandy Magnan at

rhbocceball@gmail.com (mailto:rhbocceball@gmail.com) mailto:rhbocceball@gmail.comor 707-485-4288 as soon as possible. We will be in contact with Captains to get the schedules set as soon as we have the number of teams that will be playing.

Let us make this season the best despite the challenges that have plagued us during 2020!

Bowling League

Attention league bowlers:

By majority vote, there will be no bowling league for the 2021 bowling season. We hope and pray to see you all back in 2022 healthy and safe.

Respectfully.

Cayman Golf

Cayman Golf will be played every Monday at 9:00 a.m. We play a 4-man scramble, it’s a good way to meet a lot of new people. Stop by Monday morning to check it out 20 minutes before tee time. Signup sheet in the hall in Golf Shop. Playtime posted Sunday afternoon.

In the 1980’s pro golfer Jack Nicklaus asked the MacGregor Golf Company to develop a ball for a small course his design company was laying out on Grand Cayman Island. Troy Puckett, then MacGregor’s top golf equipment engineer, produced The Cayman ball.

The Cayman ball is the same size as a golf ball. Has dimples on its surface and weighs approximately 24 grams, compared to the average 45 grams of a traditional golf ball. Together this restricts its distance to only slightly more than half the distance of

a golf ball with a fast swing and a greater percentage with a slower swing. Also, the Cayman ball floats on water hazards and streams.

Cayman golf is more readily accepted by those who have never played golf. To these people, this game has several advantages over golf or pitch and putt. Also, this means that playing Cayman golf is perfect for the whole family, many women, young people, older seniors, and even disabled persons. In fact, anyone who wants to play golf when the joy and ease of Cayman golf

Fitness Club

Seasons Greetings from the Board of Directors of the Fitness Club!  For those new to Roadhaven, the Wellness Center, or “the gym”, is located by the Cantina.  The gym may feel small when you first walk in, but we are planning to have more space one day.  Or hope to.  But as small as it is, you can still have a good workout in our facility because we have some of the best professional-grade equipment available.

Whether you’re in sunny Arizona or the frozen north this winter, remember to drink enough water, to stay hydrated.  We all need to consume at least 8 8-oz glasses of water each day, or we risk becoming dehydrated.  This is true even if, or especially if, we drink a lot of tea or coffee, as caffeine acts as a diuretic.  Some symptoms of dehydration are fatigue, sleepiness, dizziness, headaches, and muscle cramps.  So if you’re not feeling 100%, ask yourself “Have I have drunk enough water today?”, then drink a glass.    And, as our immune systems are weaker when our bodies are dehydrated, we are more likely to catch colds or the flu if we don’t drink enough water.  Stay hydrated to stay healthy.

2020-2021 Membership fees are due January 1^st.  Applications are available inside the entrance to the gym.  Note the restrictions on hours and the numbers allowed in the gym during the pandemic.  Club members clean the equipment and the facility monthly, so consider joining them on the clean-up night in January.

Glass Crafters

Happy New Year!  Here’s to wishing that 2021 is not as chaotic as last year.

Glass Crafters is up and running.  Come by and check it out.  Classes are being held for beginners and fused glass so sign up soon.  Four students max per class.

Monitors are still needed so if you have time please volunteer.  We are open 9-12 and 1-4 Monday thru Friday depending on if we get enough volunteers.

Masks are required and we are limiting occupancy at this time.

Hiking Club

WANDER ALONG WITH HIKING CLUB

Do you want to get out for some fresh air, exercise, and enjoy our beautiful Sonoran Desert and make new friends with other nature lovers?

Come out and sign up for a hike!! Hiking is very safe; the snakes don’t come out until over 70 degrees, which means March.  We go early, which helps!  When hiking, a good safe hiking practice is to stay on trails, and don’t put your hands or feet where you can’t see.

Trial hike with Club is free, then $5 annual dues.

We go on easy, moderate, or challenging hikes Monday through Thursday mornings, meeting at 7:45AM, usual return by noon.  To sign up for a hike with an experienced hike leader, go to the bulletin boards between the Library and the Card Room where descriptions are posted.

Easy hikes:  2-4 miles, little to no elevation gain

Moderate hikes:  4-6.5 miles, little to several hundred feet elevation gain

Challenging hikes:  6.5 miles+, elevation gain varies.

Bring sturdy shoes, water, sunscreen, snack, a hat, and hiking sticks (optional, but helpful).

Normally we have social potlucks in January & February, and a picnic in March, but this season socials will be outdoors in the afternoons.

This year most of our Canadian hike leaders are not able to come, so we need extra hike leaders.  So please call Warren Emery (608-316-0024) if you know some of the trails in the area and would like to sign up as a leader.  Any questions?  Call Warren Emery.

Covid19:  Hiking is outdoors, and we will be staying at least 6 feet apart, and driving separately.  For complete Covid19 posting see bulletin board.

Hospitality & Promotions

We want to wish all residents of Roadhaven a very Happy New Year.  We hope you managed to celebrate the Holiday Season even though it was very different for us.

The hospitality room will remain closed in the new year. We hope you are all safe & healthy wherever you have decided to spend this year.  If you are interested in property in Roadhaven we encourage you to check out the Roadhaven website under Real Estate.

The hospitality email is

hospitalityand (mailto:hospitalityandinformation@gmail.com) information@gmail.com (mailto:hospitalityandinformation@gmail.com) if you have any questions.

Take care and all the best in 2021!

Karaoke Fun

Happy New Year! During this new beginning, we all need some fun, and that’s what we’ve got for you every Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 till 5:00 PM in the Main Hall.  You are very welcome to join us – wearing your mask, of course.  We appreciate all new and “old” singers as well as an audience!

Thanks so much to Gene who sets up and takes down all the equipment and runs the technical end for our Karaoke sessions.  Our computer is just loaded with Karaoke songs, so most likely we have your songs ready for you.  If you are hankering to hear one of your favorite songs, you may request someone to attempt to sing it for you.  Some of our singers and listeners take to the floor to swing their partner when the mood hits them or joins the line dancers when a country song is performed.

If you’ve never tried Karaoke before, come a half-hour early to practice ahead of time, and Gene will help you find your key.  So — what are you waiting for? Karen Woodwick

Men’s Golf League

Come join the 58 men that have joined the Men’s League as of December 12th.

Quite a slip from the 98 a year ago on December 12^th.  No “hole in one” yet, the jackpot stands at $290 and is growing weekly.  You can’t get a shot at the jackpot if you don’t join the Men’s League.

Men’s league started a team division last season which was well received and a lot of fun.  The guys formed 2 person teams that played a round-robin schedule. It was scheduled as a part of our 1 o’clock tee time.  We plan to offer a team division starting in January which will take the place of the 1 o’clock tee time group.  Get your teams formed.  Congratulations 2020 team winners: 1^st place Tom Ekblad/John Miller; 2^nd place Ron Carmichael/Greg Walden: 3^rd place Jerry Jeremiason/Steve Yackey.

Plan to start our annual match tournament sign up the 1^st week of January.  Hope to get it rolling in mid-January.

Have a BBQ scheduled for January 28^th.  With the pandemic, we don’t see how it would be safe for the BBQ crew.  Still working on replacing it with a catered lunch, which we can do with social distancing.

Join the Men’s league and enjoy a little competitive golf.  Get in on the Match Play Tournament. Try to get a part of the “hole in one” jackpot.  Sign up on one of the weekly tee timesheets (on the men’s bulletin board in the clubhouse hallway) before Wednesday noon and then show up at your assigned starting hole according to the tee time that you signed up for.  An email will be sent Wednesday afternoon to indicate where your starting hole is.

Par-Tee Girls Golf League

The Par-Tee Girls Executive Board is excited to announce that league play will begin January 6th, 2021, and will end March 17th, 2021.

The dues will be $5.00 for the season and there will be No weekly payouts. The payouts at the end of the season TBD. This season the League will only be playing 9 Holes. If ladies want to play 18 holes, they can continue on for another round. Please advise the ladies working in the golf shop who will be playing onto the 2nd 9 holes.

The membership envelopes will be on the box in the hallway and our treasurer Jackie Beatty has edited the envelopes to $5.00 for the 2020-2021 Par-Tee Girls membership season. There will be no “Hole in One” payout. The remainder of funds from membership fees and their usage TBD.

Remember, even though you have a Par-Tee Girls membership, it is still necessary to have a Roadhaven yearly membership, a monthly membership or a punch card which can be purchased in the golf shop.

The golf day process is as follows:

Par-Tee Girls League play will be scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. each Wednesday.

The signup sheet will be Foursomes at 10-minute increments and posted on the clipboard just inside the door in the hallway. Please sign up for play by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. It is important to show up 10 minutes prior to your scheduled tee time and be ready to golf on time.

There will not be any starters this year. One person from each Foursome needs to fill in their team scorecard using complete names and handicaps. The scorecards are in the mailbox outside the golf shop. Place the completed scorecard in the basket that will be placed at the check-in window at the golf shop

The handicap sheet is hanging on the bulletin board. All new players need to play 4 games during league play to establish a handicap. A Zero will be used until a handicap is established.

Due to the Roadhaven Covid 19 guidelines, we will not be meeting in the Green Room. Remember, no more than 5 people are to be in the hallway at a time. Masks are required and social distance.

The Par-Tee Ladies league always welcomes new players. Golfing experience is not a prerequisite. We are out here to have fun and meet old and new friends.  Please sign up and come out and join us on Wednesday mornings.

Unfortunately, the Fashion Show scheduled for February 2021 has been canceled, again thanks to COVID19.  Plans are already in progress for February 2022.

Our new executive for the 2020 -2021 league is:

Laverne Czichotzki, Captain

Jackie Beatty, Treasurer

Carol McCassey, Co-Captain

Anne Beauchamp, Co-Treasurer

Judy Dutler, Co-Captain

Lorraine O`Brien, Co-Secretary

Enjoy golfing.

Time Out

The new season for Time Out is upon us again.  The purpose of the Time Out organization is to relieve residents of Roadhaven who are giving care to a spouse, or relative that is either terminally ill or undergoing temporary health problems.  The “Time Out” group will relieve the caregivers who either need to run errands, purchase groceries, pick up prescriptions, or just get away for a few hours.

Our primary goal is to provide support to the caregiver and to spend the necessary time with his or her spouse, friend, or relative so that the caregiver can get some personal time away from his or her duties as the primary caregiver.

Volunteering some time (usually 2-hour sessions) as a Time Out volunteer, or if you have any questions about Time Out, please call Bill or Jo Kramer at 480-982-4937.  Also, anyone who could use our services, please contact us.

Woodworkers

Welcome back to Roadhaven and the Roadhaven Woodshop after the holidays.  The Woodshop is in full swing now under Covid 19 protocol. Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 12:00 and 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Monitors will provide assistance with your project or help you to safely operate the shop’s fine array of modern woodworking tools. New members are also always welcome. The cost of a membership is a nominal $20.00 for the season

New and substitute Monitors are always required, so if you are interested in being a monitor, leave your name with a Monitor on duty, and training on the equipment will be provided. In addition, the Spaghetti dinner fundraiser and raffle for the Woodshop will not be held as well.

On the brighter side, some members of the woodshop had crafted and donated bowls for the Beads of Courage program for children suffering a long-term illness.  The child receives a bead for each medical procedure. These bowls are to hold the beads.  Members donating the bowls to the Banner Children’s Hospital are Terry Green, Rich Sims, Loren Green, and Larry Stearns.
